HISTORY:

Dorian draws on a history dating back to about 1790 of three prominent families on the island of Oinoussai - the Hadjipateras, Lemos and Lyras families. In 1905, they purchased their first steamer, the 3,550 ton "MARIETTA RALLI" (seen in the background above). In the decade or so after the Second World War, they contracted a number of general cargo ships from shipyards in Japan and Yugoslavia and a tanker, the 20,000 ton "PROMACHOS" from a shipyard in Belgium (see adjacent photo).

In the 1950s, Orient Mid-East Lines, a liner service was founded with regular sailings from the U.S. Great Lakes and the Mediterranean to the Far East utilizing what were then the largest deep-sea ships calling at ports in the U.S. Great Lakes. To handle agency & operations for this service, Eagle Ocean Transport Inc., was established in New York City.

During the following decades, the families have been involved in the ownership and operation of general cargo ships, bulk-carriers, combination carriers, tankers and most recently gas (LPG) carriers. Many of these have been newbuildings.

Valiant Transports Ltd.(Valiant), an affiliated chartering company performed a Contract of Affreightment with Societe Cheriffiene des Petroles, a Moroccan state oil company over a period of three years between 1979 - 1981. Valiant carried 50% of that company’s imports to Morocco. Since then, Valiant has been active in time-chartering other tonnage, both dry-cargo and tanker, the most recent transaction being in 2002 when it chartered for two years the post-Panamax double hull tanker “ALLORO” (70,000 DWT built 1997) which other Principals of Dorian subsequently purchased.

In 2002, Dorian’s Principals sold their last two single hull tankers, “WYOMING” (355,000 DWT built 1975) and “ORIENT TIGER” (270,000 DWT built 1976).

2002 also marked the entry of Dorian’s Principals into gas transportation with their purchase of two 3,200 M3 fully pressurised LPG carriers, “COTSWOLD” and “SNOWDON” (both built 1989).

This was followed in 2003 with the purchase of two 3,300 M3 fully pressurised LPG carriers, “CHEVIOT” and “CHILTERN” (both built 1997), and in 2004 with the purchase of one 3,500 M3 fully pressurised LPG carrier, “GRAMPIAN” (built 1996).

Dorian's Principals have also been active recently in contracting newbuildings.

In 2003, they placed an order with Hyundai Samho for one 320,000 DWT double hull VLCC M/T "CHRYSANTHEMUM" which was delivered and on-sold in 2005.

In 2004, they placed an order with Hyundai Heavy Industries for one 82,000 cbm VLGC named CAPTAIN MARKOS NL” which was delivered in November 2006 and an order with Sumitomo for two double hull 105,000 DWT Aframaxes M/T "OKLAHOMA” delivered September 2006 and M/T ”MITERA MARIGO” delivered January 2007.

In 2005 they placed an order with Hyundai Heavy Industries for three more 82,000 cbm VLGC's the first of which “CAPTAIN JOHN NP” is due for delivery in 2007.

In 2006 an order was placed out at Hyundai Heavy Industries for three more Aframax tankers for delivery February, April and June 2009.

Since 2002, Dorian operates several Panamax bulk carriers as well, M/V "OINOUSSIAN LEGEND" (built 1997) and M/V "OINOUSSIAN STRENGTH" (built 1987), which was sold in May 2005. Also since 2006 M/V ”IONIAN FATHER” (built 1995) was added to the fleet.

Dorian and its USA and UK agencies continue to focus on excellence in the services they provide to customers, mindful of environmental concerns, and increasing costs of operation as well as increased legislative and operational requirements.
